The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce held its annual Outstanding Educational Program Awards dinner on Friday, May 20, bringing together business leaders, educators and the community to honor teachers who are creating and leading remarkable academic programs in Carlsbad's schools.
The event took place at the La Costa Resort & Spa. During the evening, awards were given out in four categories. The winners are:
• ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM, Carlsbad High School's journalism program, led by Danielle Ryan.
• INNOVATIVE PROGRAM, Calavera Hills Middle School's Coyote Crossroads program, led by Jesse Gonzalez and Kelley Lupu.
• SCIENCE PROGRAM, Aviara Oaks Elementary School's Science & Robotics Educational Enrichment Program, led by Elizabeth Ables.
• THE ARTS, Kelly Elementary School's Kelly Broadcasting Club, led by Gabie Norton and Philip Ireland.
"We know that the business of success starts with our schools, which is why we pay tribute to teachers who go above and beyond to make learning gratifying for their students," said Toni Padron, the chamber's executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Winners and finalists were awarded funds to put toward the programs. The teacher of the year from each Carlsbad school and the overall teacher of the year from the Carlsbad Unified and Encinitas Union school districts also received special recognition.
More than 325 people, including business leaders, educators, elected officials and community members, helped the chamber and its Partners in Education Foundation toast teachers by attending the dinner. The event included a reception featuring a display of each nominated program, a multimedia presentation of finalist programs and a gourmet dinner.
Program sponsors were AlphaGraphics, SD Trophy, Dos Gringos, La Costa Resort and Spa, LEGOLAND California, Life Technologies Corp., RAM Enterprises International, Sylvan Learning Center Encinitas and Tri-City Medical Center. This year's Partners in Education sponsor was NRG, Carlsbad Energy Center. The gift sponsor was Westfield Plaza Camino Real.
