The plan to redevelop the Carlsbad Village area is a step in the right direction when it comes to walkability.
The Carlsbad Village Redevelopment Master Plan and Design Manual recently received WalkSanDiego's 2008 Golden Footprints Award in the Project Category. The awards were handed out at WalkSanDiego's Open House and Golden Footprints Award event Jan. 31 in San Diego.
Kathy Garcia, a member of WalkSanDiego's Advisory Board, said the Village plan was chosen for the award because it protects and improves the pedestrian circulation of the historic, mixed-use area, making it more possible to park once, if at all, and walk to meet a variety of needs, catch a train or take a beach stroll.
Debbie Fountain, Carlsbad's housing and redevelopment director, said the award affirms the vision for the Village is moving in the right direction.
“This award is important because it highlights the walkable nature of the Village on a region-wide basis,” Fountain said. “This will help raise the awareness of the Village as a fun place to shop and dine.”
The recently formed Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership, or Carlsbad VIP, is working toward implementing revitalization plans for Carlsbad's downtown area. The umbrella organization will coordinate and oversee the many groups that will be performing tasks to assist with the Village revitalization.
WalkSanDiego is a regional organization formed in 1998 that is dedicated to making San Diego County neighborhoods more walkable. Through educational events, training, advocacy and work with local governments, the grassroots organization encourages planning and land use practices that result in improved streetscape designs, accessible walking paths and traffic calming measures.
