The businesses within the Village of Carlsbad had to work hard to meet the economic challenges of 2009 in a competitive, survival of the fittest environment.
While the Village did lose some businesses during a very difficult year and we are always sad to see this happen, I want to congratulate the significant majority that adjusted to the difficult economy in a positive manner and were able to hang in there. We know there may be more bad times before the economy starts its full recovery, but this is not the first time the Village has experienced difficult times. Many of the area's businesses have demonstrated that they are survivors year after year.
The economy will get better and businesses will begin to prosper as they have in the past. In the meantime, let's all celebrate the tenacity of the Village businesses and the successes of 2009 by making a New Year's resolution to shop more, eat more and have more fun in the Village in 2010.
The Village doesn't have a multi-screen theater, a large number of chain stores or even big weekly events. However, its unique environment, small town charm, collection of wonderful businesses, wide diversity of eating establishments, award-winning entertainment venues and, most importantly, people create a collective draw for the area, which is unmatched by other commercial districts.
The people of the Village are some of the best you will ever find. They care about downtown Carlsbad and want to share it with others.
In 2009, several new businesses opened in the area, including a few new restaurants, and some popular businesses expanded. I often receive very positive comments about the Village and how much it is loved by residents and visitors alike.
I am often surprised by the number of people I speak to who visited Carlsbad on a vacation and then moved to the city because they were charmed by the Village. I believe these are all great stories to tell.
There is a lot going on in the Village. If you haven't been lately, start this year off right with a visit to the area.
Don't forget to eat a little, shop a little, walk a little, sit a little and then come back a lot.
