Waste Management Carlsbad was recently recognized as the first hauling company in the municipal solid waste industry in California to achieve Star Certification, which is the highest safety achievement offered by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or Cal/OSHA.
The certification is through Cal/OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program, or VPP.
Waste Management Carlsbad is the first Waste Management hauling district in North America that has achieved VPP Star Certification. The achievement also is noteworthy because Waste Management Carlsbad is the second facility in San Diego County, in any industry, to ever receive Star Certification.
VPP is designed to recognize safety and health systems that effectively prevent and control occupational hazards. The program emphasizes the importance of site-specific safety programs, and encourages their improvement.
Cal/OSHA provides recognition to those sites with programs that have achieved occupational health and safety excellence. There are approximately 45 Star Certified sites in California and about 2,000 in the United States, according to estimates from Cal/OSHA.
