There's a lot to be learned from the successes of other small business members. When you attend committee meetings or Chamber events and workshops, you should be constantly "netweaving". These are some of the ways that Chamber members have successfully used their marketing skills and their membership.
Christina Madrid, of Breakthrough HR, shared her experiences: "This past weekend, my family and I attended a company picnic of one of my clients, a company who found me in the Carlsbad Business Directory. This client first contacted me about a year ago and has since become a long-term retained client. I have really enjoyed the connections I have been able to make and nurture as a result of my membership".
Cindy Broderdorf, of PrideStaff, thanks other members for their support:
When we first joined the Chamber, I explored all the committees and First Friday Breakfasts and met many interesting people. But the greatest rewards came from the experience and ideas of the many gracious Chamber members and staff. Members of the Business Resource Committee volunteered to teach me how to present a 17-second commercial and the value of always wearing my name badge. Whenever I catch someone looking at my name badge and asking about my company, I can quickly and concisely introduce my service and myself. Another member, Claudia Jean, reminded me how far the indelible "art of a compliment" can ultimately extend. Claudia has also taught me that the basic principle works both ways. By focusing on creating your own unique style, most people are likely to strike up a conversation with you as well! I also have benefited from a First Friday speaker, Debbie Barnett, the Yoga Woman, who I now work with as a personal sales coach. My work with Debbie has resulted in my largest commission to date. Finally, I believe the exposure to creative people and ideas has prompted me to try new marketing techniques that have undoubtedly separated me from my competition.
Susan McCabe, Daily Dish, will be featured in the December issue of Kiplinger Magazine in a story on 'dream jobs'. Susan says: "You should never give up on public relations." She also said she continually keeps her clients and her industry updated on her successes. Sometimes her networking and marketing efforts take months to unfold, but she continues to highlight her efforts when possible. Susan has made some very good contacts at Chamber events which have lead to collaborations with companies such as the Carlsbad Wine Merchant.
Many people have great stories to tell about how they have promoted their business. We'd love to hear your success stories and hints for other businesses too. Contact Andrea Korogi at (760) 931-8400.
