After surviving a tough battle with breast cancer in 2005, Suzanne Penny opened A Pink Ribbon boutique in Carlsbad to help other cancer patients and survivors.
She thought the bad times were behind her, especially as her business thrived and she was able to comfort customers with her story and a sympathetic ear. In January, Penny was planning to expand her business when she was diagnosed with acute leukemia.
Penny had to close her store while undergoing treatment, but her friends and loyal customers rallied behind her and formed a committee that organizes blood and bone marrow drives, built and maintains the www.HelpSuzanne.org Web site, organizes fundraisers, solicits donations and seeks media coverage of her plight. The group not only wants to help her stay financially afloat, but also hopes to save her life.
Although Penny went into remission March 5, she is only halfway there. She still needs to find a bone marrow donor who is a match.
The next blood and bone marrow drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 12 at the San Diego Blood Bank, 440 Upas St., San Diego. To schedule an appointment, call (619) 296-6393 or visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org and click on “Appointments” and then enter the sponsor code TLLS.
The main criteria for a bone marrow match is heritage. Because Penny is of German heritage, others who are of German decent are more likely to be able to provide a match for her.
