So a new year is upon us and you have drawn your proverbial line in the sand. 2011 is going to be your year. You have resolved to take your business to the next level and separate yourself from the pack. To do so, some of you have committed to raising your environmental awareness and making your business “greener.” What should your goals be? How will you measure them?
Life does get in the way; will this be another resolution tossed aside, lying helplessly abandoned with the public speaking classes, Spanish lessons and abdominal sculpting machines? Not if the Carlsbad Chamber's Sustainability Committee has anything to say about it!
This committee is a wealth of knowledge, both in its people and its programs, designed to get you on the right track and push you through the finish line.
The crown jewel of the committee's resources is the Green Business Certification Checklist. This is a voluntary, self-grading checklist that your business can use to identify the various ways in which you can be more sustainable.
The checklist makes it easy to get started. It lays out the areas where the most common changes can be made. The checklist also provides suggestions of how to implement specific improvements. Carpooling and rideshare, buying non-toxic chemicals and recycled paper, and replacing electronics or lights with newer, more energy efficient ones. The committee helps get your questions answered and make the transition as successful as possible.
The Sustainability Committee also holds monthly workshops.
During these workshops experts on the subject give their advice and opinions. Local businesses talk about what they have done and why and, importantly, what the impact has been on their workforce, profits and community.
On one hand these workshops are intended to spark interest and educate attendees on the subject. On the other, there are real, local businesses giving their version of what worked and what the result was. Ultimately, that is what sustainability is all about; making profits in a manner that advances the human condition and the planet.
The Sustainability Committee also coordinates two annual events: the Business is Green Expo in March and the annual Eco-Tour in November. Drawing people from all over San Diego County, the Expo is an amazing opportunity for Chamber businesses to showcase their sustainable products or services. It is also a great, one-stop shop for attendees to find the types of businesses who value sustainable practices.
The annual Eco-Tour visits local, Chamber member businesses to give a firsthand glimpse of how these businesses impact our local environment and business community. So if you have resolved to take your business in a greener direction in 2011, let the Chamber and the Sustainability Committee help you plan and execute your goals.
You're on your own for the abs thing.
