A community that serves those who served

One of the things I love most about being part of the Carlsbad business community is seeing the many different ways people choose to serve. Some serve through their businesses. Some volunteer their time. Some mentor the next generation. And some dedicate themselves to supporting the people who have already given so much to all of us.

That’s why I’m especially proud to recognize Veterans Association of North County (VANC)  as the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit of the Year. VANC represents something that I believe is at the very heart of a great community: we take care of our own.

Our veterans have served our country, and VANC makes sure they don’t have to navigate life after service alone. Through connection, resources, advocacy, programs and community, VANC helps veterans and their families find the support and often,  simply the sense of belonging they deserve. And I think that last part is particularly important.

VANC is a great role model in the community for creating a place where someone knows they can walk through the door. They know that it’s about meeting another person who understands where you’ve been. It’s about knowing that your community has your back. That is the kind of work VANC does every day.

Their impact also reaches well beyond the veterans they directly serve. VANC brings businesses, volunteers, families and community members together around a common purpose. In doing so, they remind all of us that a strong community isn’t built by any one organization or individual. It’s built by people willing to show up for one another. That spirit is something we should celebrate.

As the Chamber, we have the privilege of recognizing businesses and organizations that make Carlsbad and North County better places to live, work and grow. VANC is a perfect example of that. Their work may look different from what many of us do every day, but the goal is the same: building a stronger, more connected community. Congratulations to VANC on being named our Nonprofit of the Year and thank you to everyone who makes their work possible.

Most importantly, to the veterans and their families who have given so much: thank you for your service. We are grateful to have VANC serving alongside us, and our community is better because they are here.
