A new umbrella organization, the Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership, will serve as a coordinating base for all business revitalization efforts in the Village.
This organization is anticipated to build upon and capture the strengths of the community and all of its associated interests, without duplicating any current work. There will be many different organizations performing tasks to assist with Village revitalization, and Carlsbad VIP will oversee and coordinate those tasks.
A working group, guided by a consultant hired by the city, has completed several tasks to establish the organization, including:
• Creating the organization's name, Carlsbad Village Improvement Partnership, or Carlsbad VIP.
• Developing a mission statement for the organization, which states “Carlsbad VIP is committed to creating a vibrant coastal Village through collaborative actions that enhance the vitality of businesses, welcome visitors, sustain the health of our residential neighborhoods and promote a safe and cohesive community.”
• Developing a community blog to inform the public about the activities of Carlsbad VIP and share information about the Village, like the opening of New Village Arts Theater. The public can view and comment on the blog at www.friendsofthevillage.blogspot.com.
• Creating bylaws for the organization, which are under legal review.
• Generating an initial budget and identifying potential funding sources.
• Establishing a selection process for a Carlsbad VIP board of directors and inviting people to serve on the initial nine-member board. The board includes Mary Bressi, a representative of Village retail businesses; Alan Wanamaker, a representative of Village service businesses; Julie Baker, a Carlsbad resident; Craig Kirk, a general member; Frank Hutchins, a representative of lenders and investors; Laura Kurner, an arts and culture representative; Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce; Robin Young, executive director of the Carlsbad Village Business Association and Kurt Burkhart, executive director of the Carlsbad Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The new Carlsbad VIP board will begin meeting this month. They have hard work ahead of them as they begin the tasks of refining the work plan for the new organization, obtaining the necessary funding and hiring an executive director.
The board also will be busy recruiting members for the organization's subcommittees, which include design and development, organization, promotion and economic restructuring. For information about joining a subcommittee, call (760) 434-2815.
