Carlsbad Unified welcomes Dr. Andrea Norman

The Carlsbad Unified School District is pleased to welcome its new superintendent, Dr. Andrea Norman.  She comes to CUSD from Oceanside Unified.

Dr. Norman has a track record of strategic leadership in TK-12 education and selfless service to students, staff, and families.  Her career demonstrates her unwavering dedication to providing all of her students with the opportunities and services they need to thrive. In the same way, she is devoted to equipping educators with the resources and tools required to support students academically, socially, and emotionally.

“Having been here only a few months, I’m already impressed with Carlsbad Unified’s strong ties to business and the community,” says Dr. Norman. “I already see that this district and community are committed to connecting students with a wealth of real-world knowledge and experience. And I am learning about its multiple career pathways and Career Technical Education programs in the classroom and beyond. I look forward to continuing these traditions and expanding the world of school-to-career opportunities for our students.”

Born and raised in North County, Dr. Norman is proud to share that both her father and grandfather were Marines stationed in San Diego. She has worked in public education for 27 years, in a wide range of roles across five California school districts. She began her career in 1997 in the Los Angeles Unified School District as an elementary school teacher. She then transitioned into school administration as an assistant principal, and later served as an elementary school principal for over a decade in the Temecula Valley and Saddleback Valley Unified School Districts. She also served as Director of K-12 Curriculum and Instruction in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Most recently, Dr. Norman worked for four years in the Oceanside Unified School District as Associate Superintendent of Business Services and for two years as its Director of Certificated Human Resources.

Dr. Norman holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California, where her studies focused on student success through site leadership and data-driven decision-making. She earlier earned a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from CSU Dominguez Hills and a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from CSU Long Beach.

Dr. Norman, her husband Tom, and their three sons live in San Clemente. Her oldest son is a freshman at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. Like their older brother before them, both of her younger sons are athletes and play football at San Clemente High School.

“I am thrilled to join this student-centered, high-achieving school district as its new superintendent,” Dr. Norman says. “I look forward to meeting the people of Carlsbad and leading our district into a successful future.”
