Chamber 101

As we head into 2026, I thought I would tackle one of the most basic questions that my staff and I get as we engage the business community: What is a chamber of commerce, and how does the chamber benefit my community?

Since you are holding our monthly publication in the palm of your hand (or viewing it on your digital screen), it would be easy to assume that you already know the answer to this question – but that would be foolish on my part as experience tells me that most college students, young professionals, and general community members don’t have any idea what we are or what value we bring. So here goes some Chamber 101!

In our industry, we have a saying…If you’ve seen one chamber, you’ve seen one chamber!  And while that is true to a degree as each chamber morphs to meet the unique needs of its community, there are some commonalities.

First, the basics – chambers are nonprofit membership organizations.  We are not charities (501c3), but we are nonprofits. We are not part of the city government. We at the Carlsbad Chamber do not get any financial support from the City of Carlsbad.  If we get funds, it would only be in a “fee-for-service” type of arrangement.

Our mission is to serve the community as an economic catalyst, a leadership convener, and a community champion.  Our official “swim lane” is in the economic development arena. But economic development has morphed over the decades (yes, I’ve been doing this for multiple decades now).  No longer is economic development solely focused on recruiting great businesses to your community.  In today’s uber-connected business world, talented people go wherever they want to go, and they bring their incoming earning potential and entrepreneurship with them. Therefore, we must be a community that attracts talented people (not just good companies).  What does that look like?  Great schools, low crime rates, amenities, nightlife, and all the other quality of life metrics you can think of.  In other words, economic development and community development are 100% intertwined. That is why we are so passionate about our programs like Future CEO, Rising Stars, SOCAL, Kindness Certified Companies, Beyond the Uniform, and more.

As nice as community development is, however, most businesses join the chamber to grow their customer base. We are very good at helping businesses make meaningful connections. We host over 500 events/meetups each year.  That is not a typo – yes, over 500! That equates to over 4,000 participants each year. Monthly, we host Happy Hours, First Friday Breakfasts, Coffee Connections, and Lunch Mobs.  We have 8 active committees that all meet monthly as well.  And as of this writing, we are up to 5 weekly networking/referral groups. With that said, there is always room for more, including you and your referrals, so let us know if you want to join in the fun…and yes, we do have fun!

The last benefit I will highlight is how we advocate for our members. This is another big pillar for us.  And advocacy takes a variety of forms.  I’ll share the two most basic forms. Firstly, we watch legislation being proposed in the city, county, and state that could affect business.  During the last state legislative cycle, the California Chamber of Commerce identified 27 bills that would adversely affect business (they used to call these bills Job Killers; now they loosely refer to them as Cost Drivers).  I’m happy to report that all 27 were amended or stopped altogether.  By engaging in coalitions and interfacing with our elected officials, we were very active in fighting against these bad bills. The previous year, 24 of 25 were stopped or amended.  That’s a very high batting average. Secondly, we actively interface with local and/or regional jurisdictions on behalf of our members.  This can have many facets – permit assistance, sign regulation help, zoning issues, and more. We love stepping up for our members and standing in the gap.  Sometimes this just involves knowing the right person to engage.  Other times it involves attending public hearings or meetings and testifying. Any way you slice it, we are willing to actively engage.  And I have a sea of stories of how we have assisted in little (and sometimes big) ways to help our members.

If you are not currently part of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, we would like to invite you to join us!  If your business is outside of Carlsbad but you already do business here (or want to), join us (30% of our 1,100 members are based outside of Carlsbad). We are excited for 2026, and we would love for you to be part of our family!
