Cultural arts as a community and economic asset

Cultural arts are an essential part of what makes a community vibrant, distinctive, and connected. They tell the stories of a place, reflect its history and identity, inspire new ideas, and create opportunities for people to experience their community in meaningful ways. From murals and sculptures to music, theater, design, and public spaces, cultural arts represent the art of creation, and that creativity extends far beyond traditional definitions of art.

In Carlsbad, public art helps bring creativity into the everyday experience of residents and visitors. The City of Carlsbad’s public art program integrates artistic expression into shared spaces, creating opportunities for connection, reflection, and discovery. Public art can transform an ordinary location into a recognizable destination, strengthen a community’s sense of place, and help preserve and celebrate the stories that make each neighborhood unique.

The city is continuing to expand these efforts through several public art projects currently underway. New permanent public art is being planned for the future Veterans Memorial Park, a new traffic circle at Pine Avenue and Harding Street in the Barrio, and the Chestnut Avenue I-5 underpass. These projects demonstrate the importance of incorporating community voices into the creative process. The artwork planned at a new Barrio traffic circle will reflect the neighborhood’s identity and heritage, while the Chestnut underpass project will become Carlsbad’s first public art installation at a freeway underpass. Together, these projects will help create welcoming, memorable spaces while adding new cultural landmarks throughout the city. Cultural arts also play an important role in the San Diego regional economy. According to the latest study from the Policy & Innovation Center’s Creative Economy in the San Diego Region report, creative industries generated an estimated $10.8 billion in total economic impact in the region, representing 3.7% of San Diego County’s gross regional product. The creative economy supported nearly 170,000 jobs, including 82,467 direct creative economy jobs and nearly 87,000 indirect jobs throughout the broader economy.

The creative economy reaches far beyond traditional arts organizations. The region’s 71 creative industries range from digital media and music to architecture, interior design, fashion and other creative fields. The report identified 6,179 creative firms in the region, with more than 80% of creative businesses operating as small businesses. Creative businesses also generate activity across many other sectors by supporting local vendors and service providers, including marketing, graphic design, communications, event planning, accounting, legal services and construction. In Carlsbad, the art of creation can be seen everywhere, from local artists and cultural organizations to some of the city’s largest employers. Creativity is an important part of designing and producing the innovative products that reach customers around the world. Carlsbad’s sports and active lifestyle companies use creativity, design, engineering and technology to develop leading golf equipment, apparel, footwear and other consumer products. The process of bringing an idea from concept to market requires artistic vision alongside technical expertise, research, manufacturing and business strategy.

This broader understanding of creativity helps connect cultural arts and economic development. Both depend on talent, innovation and the ability to imagine new possibilities. Public art enhances the character and quality of life of a community, while creative industries generate jobs, support local businesses and contribute to a diverse and resilient economy.

By investing in cultural arts, supporting local artists and incorporating creativity into public spaces, Carlsbad is strengthening both its community identity and its economic future. The art of creation is not limited to what hangs on a gallery wall or stands in a public park; it is reflected in the ideas, products, experiences, and places that continue to shape Carlsbad.
