Diamond Environmental Services, Carlsbad roots sparkle

U2’s Bono was “caught” by paparazzi exiting a Diamond portable restroom in 2013. Tiger Woods and other elite golfers used Diamond Premier comfort stations at Torrey Pines Golf Course tournaments. Basketball players and spectators, including then-President Obama, could take advantage of Diamond’s comprehensive sanitation services when Michigan State played UNC aboard the famed USS Carl Vinson docked off San Diego on 11/11/11.

Established in 1988, family-owned and operated Diamond Environmental Services
has a sparkling history. Much of that history begins and continues in Carlsbad.

Owner Eric de Jong relates, “I started working at Carlsbad-based Coast Waste Management in 1984, fresh out of high school. My dad, Arie, owned the company. I began as a trash route driver handling residential, commercial, and rolloff industrial services throughout Carlsbad; working there until the company was sold in 1997, ultimately to Waste Management.”

He confides, “During this time, I married my lovely wife, Silva. From 1992-2000, as we started a family that included one daughter and two sons, we lived on Pine Avenue, up the street from Holiday Park. We enjoyed ‘Olde Carlsbad’ experiences, including Oktoberfest, and made many long-lasting friends and lifetime memories.”

The family moved to San Marcos to be closer to Diamond’s headquarters. Beginning as a tiny porta-potty company with de Jong and Operations Manager Warren Van Dam doing it all, including cleaning toilets, de Jong says, “We grew the business through hard work, great employees, and a common-sense commitment to service. We still daily actuate our belief in our original tagline: Simplicity, Reliability, and Personal Attention.”

On the Go to Meet Your Needs

When people think about infrastructure supporting Carlsbad’s and California’s economy, they may picture highways, bridges, and construction projects. Less visible but equally important are the environmental services that help keep those projects moving safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulations.

From public works to community events to private-sector development, sanitation and site-support services play a critical role. Diamond has established a significant presence in this space, contributing to our community’s success and growth, and the enjoyment of events. As de Jong quips, “Renting and servicing 21,000 portable restrooms keeps us on the go when you have to go!”

Diamond has kept popular Carlsbad events going strong. You’ve probably spotted (and perhaps used) its pristine facilities at the Carlsbad Marathon, Carlsbad 5000, Flower Fields, Carlsbad Village Street Faire, Oktoberfest, and other events.

In addition to portable restrooms and hand sanitizers, Diamond provides RV, septic, and non-hazardous wastewater pumping as well as potable water, temporary fencing/power, and San Diego area dumpster services. With 12 dispatch centers in the counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial, 500+ locally-based employees serve thousands of customers throughout SoCal. The company has supported emergency response efforts during wildfires, natural disasters, and other critical situations where rapid deployment of sanitation, water, and site infrastructure is essential.

As its name suggests, Diamond focuses on innovative environmental solutions to promote sustainability. It operates a fleet of four EVs purchased through one of the first Port of San Diego ZE Pilot Project grants administered by the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District. Retrofitted to meet sanitation equipment transport needs, the EVs annually cover 1,400+ miles. In addition to reducing pollution, they offer minimal maintenance needs/costs, a quiet ride, safety features, and overall ease of use.

Also on the go is Eric de Jong, who is moving back to Carlsbad while building a new home in San Marcos. “Silva and I look forward to enjoying the beach life again,” he says, proving you can take the man out of Carlsbad, but you can’t take Carlsbad out of the man.
