Three decades of fresh

National Farmers Market Week will be celebrated from August 3–9, 2025. This annual event highlights the vital role that farmers’
markets play in the food system, promoting local farmers, sustainability, and community spirit. It acknowledges the efforts of local farmers to provide
fresh produce and support local economies.

The State Street Farmers Market has been Carlsbad’s reliable outdoor grocery store with a focus on fresh, local produce since 1994. We are proud to be part of this national movement recognizing the importance of small community farmers’ markets and the impact they have on their communities.

Anyone who has visited Carlsbad’s downtown farmers market on a sunny Wednesday afternoon can honestly say that the quality of vendors, their produce, their packaged artisanal foods, their hot food dishes, and their passion for what they do is top-notch. That is why people come back week after week.
But when you peel back the layers and look further, you will notice that not only is it a great market, with great offerings, but that it is also forward-thinking.

Regenerative farming, also known as regenerative agriculture, is a holistic approach to farming that focuses on restoring and
enhancing the health of the soil, improving biodiversity, and strengthening ecosystems.

It aims to work with nature to improve soil health, water quality, and resilience to climate change while maintaining food production. Two vendors, Three Sons Farm and Perennial Pastures, are both dedicated to regenerative farming, and that is why their products not only taste great but are healthier to eat and are healthier for the environment. Perennial Pastures Founder, Kevin Muno, points out that when the animals eat the diet they were meant to, it leads to more nutrient density in the meat we consume. Kevin adds, “By taking a regenerative approach to ranching, we prioritize the soil. We bring life back to the soil through our regenerative practices, which means the meat you consume actually benefits your health and the earth’s too.”

Three Sons Farm specializes in pasture-raised poultry and pasture-raised eggs. This means that their chickens spend their lives outside on pasture, eating grass, seeds, and bugs. Their chickens live and thrive in this natural, healthy environment, producing the highest quality meat and eggs. On the consumer side, the commitment by the State Street Farmers Market to eliminate single-use plastics in the market has been significant. All vendors use either compostable bags or paper bags now, and all serving ware is BPI certified and compostable. One glance around the market and you will see a majority of shoppers using their own reusable bags, further embracing their commitment to the environment.
