Why group travel may be the best way to see the world

Kathy Steffen,
Director of Fun

Travel, for me, has never simply been about visiting a place. It’s about experiencing it — understanding its history, tasting its food, meeting its people, and returning home feeling somehow changed. Over the years, I’ve discovered that the how of traveling matters just as much as the destination. That’s exactly why I love traveling with the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.

Each Chamber trip feels less like a tour and more like a shared adventure — a unique blend of education, cultural immersion, friendship, and effortless logistics. This year’s upcoming journey to Normandy, the Champagne Region, and Paris, France, perfectly captures why group travel through the Chamber has become one of my favorite ways to explore the world.

The Magic of Traveling Together

One of the biggest misconceptions about group travel is that it limits freedom. In reality, I’ve found the opposite to be true.

Traveling with the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce removes the stress of travel — the planning, language barriers, navigation, reservations, and scheduling — and replaces it with something much better: the freedom to be fully present. I don’t spend my time worrying about train connections, museum tickets, or transportation between cities. Instead, I spend it standing in historic places, tasting local cuisine, and sharing conversations with fellow travelers who quickly become friends.

If you are a single traveler, group travel offers something solo travel rarely can: community. You begin the trip as neighbors and return home as a traveling family. Meals become storytelling sessions. Bus rides become laughter-filled conversations. By the end of the journey, you not only remember the places you visited — you remember the people you experienced them with.

A Deeper Kind of Travel

Chamber travel isn’t a surface-level sightseeing vacation. It’s what I would call a Journey of Discovery.

The trips are carefully curated to connect travelers with local culture and daily life. We meet artisans, business owners, and residents. We learn how local economies function, how traditions are preserved, and how communities live today — not just how they existed in history books.

This year’s France program is a perfect
example.

In Normandy, history comes alive as we explore the region that shaped pivotal moments of World War II, while also enjoying authentic French culture and cuisine.

In the Champagne Region, we experience refined celebration — strolling charming streets, learning the centuries-old craft of champagne making, and enjoying guided tastings in one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world.

Our adventure concludes in Paris, the City of Light. From iconic landmarks and world-class art to sidewalk cafés and Seine River strolls, Paris offers the perfect blend of culture and charm. An optional extension allows even more time to explore this extraordinary city.

The Chamber travel program includes:

Round-trip air transportation from San Diego

Seven nights in first-class accommodations

Ten included meals

Guided sightseeing and entrance fees

Professional tour director assistance

Private motorcoach transportation

Baggage handling and hotel transfers

This is more than a vacation — it’s a shared experience that brings our community closer while expanding our understanding of the world.
